State Budget Update

State Budget Update

As you may be aware, the State Government last week handed down its budget for 2017/18. In this budget, we are delivering significant investment into jobs, health, education and infrastructure for all South Australians.

I have been working hard to deliver a range of investments for our community and am pleased that there has been a number of projects for the South included in the budget.

Main South Road Duplication

Firstly, $305 million has been allocated for the first stage of duplicating Main South Road from Seaford to Sellicks Beach. I am very pleased that this investment has been included in the budget, as it will make travel to and from Sellicks safer and easier for residents and visitors to the South.

Extra Train Services

Residents of the South will now have access to more weekend and evening train services to Seaford. Many residents have raised the lack of services at these times with me and this investment will allow residents to enjoy more of the fantastic events and festivals that Adelaide has to offer.

 New School

We are building better schools and creating a more dynamic education program that will benefit South Australians for generations to come. This budget includes the development of a new B-12 school in the Aldinga/Sellicks Beach region for 1400 students and a 100 student special school, with a co-located 55 place children’s centre.

 Community Infrastructure

We have committed to replacing the Old Noarlunga Footbridge that was destroyed in last years flooding. The new bridge will be built after wider consultation about what design is best suited for the location and needs of the Old Noarlunga community.

The divers’ steps at the Port Noarlunga Jetty will also undergo upgrade works. This will encourage more amateur and professional divers and snorkelers to visit the South, boosting tourism spending in the local economy.

 Jobs for the South

The budget also establishes a $200 million Future Jobs Plan that includes a Southern Jobs Taskforce Plan. We are working hard to ensure that South Australians are able to access employment and that workers have the skills necessary to transition from the traditional manufacturing industry to our rapidly growing advanced manufacturing sector.

We have also extended the Job Accelerator Grants for each new apprentice and trainee hired; businesses can claim an extra $5,000 that brings the potential funding for businesses up to $15,000.
